Part II is done. I have been waiting for several hundred pages for this dude to die, and now that he has, I’m actually really sad about it. No one is entirely evil, which is a pleasant thing, I reckon. Idk. But this book is FIRE.

LONG TIME NO UPDATE! I had been drowning in school and unable to devote the necessary time to this book up until about three days ago, and now I can’t put it down. what a freaking wonderful story this is. i need to hang out with Augustus McRae. Newt is an Angel. Lorena is my queen and I hope she gets everything she wants out of life. Call is so grandpa. Jake can kiss my ass. This is so fun

Well I finished part 1 and we are JUST NOW leaving for Montana. It’s relatively slow moving, but, man, I love the storytelling. It feels so familiar though i am ignorant of what it’s like to live their lives. Good stuff, if I may say.

over-arching lesson of part 1: a man is made good not by his words but his actions & there is always something beautiful ab where we are that we will one day miss.

LONG TIME NO GOODREADS UPDATE! I’ve been reading aplenty, just haven’t had the mind to log it. anyways, just started this monster of a book. Novels are so fun to log progress of, So here are my thoughts rn:

-Gus is like if Sam Hamilton was a little bit more promiscuous.
-Newt is presh
-Call is so grumpy old man and I love him
-Lorena needs to be loved properly for once
-OLD WESTERN NOVELS R SO BADASS & FUN

It’s good it’s just moving slower than expected which is also fine but it’s hard to love it bc it kinda feels like a book report rather than a memoir/narrative (it’s written by a man who was indeed not there so that makes total sense) and I think it’s just lacking emotion yet has TOO much “trying to be super climatic and intense and gripping” language if that makes sense

if there’s one thing y’all need to know about me it’s that I will ALWAYS be down to fuk up some military history

omg hey this is embarrassing but I’ve made no progress on either book that I am currently reading! The January and February blues have REALLY gotten to me and I haven’t be able to read a single book for pleasure ! don’t be an English major, guys!!! anyways I wanna hop back into it so maybe I can FINALLY FINISH THIS STUPID BOOK

okay so I haven’t made much progress but it’s nice ?? the narrator is one of those cynical and unreliable type of narrators though he isn’t THAT unreliable he’s just blunt and reminds me of the guy from Catcher in the Rye

a woman at Barnes and Noble told me that this was one of her favorite books. so it’s already kind of special. how exciting

setting the cringe-factor and the absolute lack of originality aside, this is honestly kind of fun. makes me feel all light and fluffy and giddy. Very different from Tolstoy. still not my vibe. I kinda like how bad it is. Idk. Maybe I’m a romcom girl now? except I’m not but man I wish I was. I sleep so much better at night when this is what I read before bed instead of Russian novels about death and oblivion.

as a detox, I’m forcing myself to read an easy, fun book more suited for my demographic. I can never finish these types of books so wish me luck!

nothing like a book about war to take the edge off after reading a book about war

my next update will be to announce my completion of this monstrosity of a novel. what will my life look like once this is finished? I fear the void that is waiting for me.

in my experience with Russian literature I have acquired the knowledge that the true story does not begin until the last third of the novel— so, let the fun begin!

points of note thus far:
- fatalism vs interconnectedness
- Tolstoy is so funny
- Napoleon is a big fat joke
- war leaders are just a bunch of immature boys who were given too much power for no good reason
- Pierre is my chubby king

Pierre is man that nothing gradually happens to. I like it.

finished part III of VII— wow. Marya is such a beautiful and complex character that I cannot help but empathize with. Pierre is kinda annoying. Natasha is REALLY annoying. Prince Bolonksky or however u spell his name is so mean that if I ever meet him, it is on sight. Andrei is growing on me kinda sorta maybe but still questionable. I love this book but I cannot wait to finish lmao

okay so volume II is bonkers

I have not been able to pick up this book since finishing Volume I due to absurd busyness but today is the day I pick it up again. Get excited

and how beautiful it was. Tolstoy just knows how to write about the most tragic things in the most beautiful way. I kinda feel like I’m reading a history report during the war times but when I really look for the meaning, it’s like reading a whole other book. If that makes sense. Idk.

WAR IS OVER (for now, trust it will return) and now we are back in peace! Sounds nice, right? EXCEPT it’s NOT! Prince Vassily is (pardon my language) a prick‼️ I hate upper class Russian society with all their French and materialism and gossip and hdhdndj like let’s go back to war. By the way. war was so fascinating. Like awesome. Peace kinda sucks but is also so good. Idk. Tolstoy is awesome. WAP is awesome
