So far, as a book inspired by Count of Monte Cristo, there is a fundamental misunderstanding of Dantes's character and his arc.

Or the author ignored that to make the protagonist your standard action girlboss from day one and took the Monte Cristo plot without the character arc that makes it so impactful

The monster's POV is the best chapter so far imo

Margaret Atwood understands that women suffer, but she also has internalized misogyny and talks about Helen in a judgmental way. She doesn't like that Helen leans into her beauty, and Penelope talks about her own sister in a detached, almost disgusted way.

This book becomes a playbook for how today's "feminist Greek retellings" are written and the thread is very clear to me

This protagonist is NOT okay but she is fascinating to observe 🤔 sometimes I think you can tell I studied psych in college by the way I gravitate towards mentally unwell narrators

The perfect end to the series

I’m listening to the 10year anniversary version of the Audiobook, which has extra scenes and a full cast. I want to love this book, but somehow find myself unfocused despite the amazing voice acting. I love the concept and meeting the different gods and goddesses. Since I haven’t managed to get hooked, I find myself confused by the plot and the moving scenes. I think this book fails the Bechdel test. DNF @Part 2
