I cannot remember if I met Marla or not just yet, that's the kind of book this is. The characters sort of blur and come and go and they leave you feeling hazy. The city itself has more character. I'm loving the hell out of this novel.

68 pages in and Alan Moore's Jerusalem feels more like a history book, but this isn't a complaint. It's this weird sexy intellectual mind fuck of a book.

What I'm enjoying most about this book is how it blends so many types of genre: a story about an orphan, hard military SF, a bit of kitchen boy fantasy, and much more.

It has a very Peter F. Hamilton feel to it. The politics of the alien cultures is detailed and at times overwhelming but also fascinating.

Has a kind of Ender's Game quality to it though not in its politics but in its focus on a young child who is out if his element. But more Space Opera-esqe.

Slow and weird. This book is a delight.

I keep on picking books that have great ideas, great settings but lousy characters. Maybe Britton gets better but fuck he whines too much.

At times uneven but I'm enjoying the characters and the action bits (when they happen) are amazing.

Mongol warriors, middle-eastern wizards, giant eagles, horses.... why did I wait so long to read this book?!?!!

Has a kind of Joyland feel to it, which if you've read, you'll know is a compliment.

Love the world, hate the characters. This happens far too much with many of the fantasy novels I've been reading the past few years.
