The sun was low in the sky, casting slant regal light. As they plodded along, the golden radiance intensified until it seemed to emanate from every feature of the land. Trees, brush, snow, hills…Winter clouds formed patterns against the fierce gray sky. Scales, looped ropes, the bones of fish. The world was tender with significance. (The Night Watchman 343)

This book is really making me appreciate 1) how much of my knowledge of arthurian canon comes from BBC Merlin and 2) how much BBC Merlin diverged from the arthurian canon .

Whatever I felt, whatever this feeling was inside of me, there is no place for it. There is no place for it to go, and U would have to carry it around inside of me for a long time, so long that it would fossilize and become a part of me (84).

My number one satire pet peeve is 1) main character is so laughable stupid and dislikeable that every single thing they do is wrapped up in them being an awful person (i call this the marvel villainization complex) and 2) health issues as satirical fodder. Both of which this book does. Okay reserving further judgement til i get further in

…if there were no Light and no Word, if Heaven and earth had never parted, if history had never happened, neither as farce or as tragedy, if my mother was never cleft, if you needed no more revisions, and if I saw no more of these visions, please, could you please just let me sleep? (354)

Displaced people also lived in two time zones, the here and the there, the present and the past, being as we were reluctant time travelers. But while science fiction imagined time travelers as moving forward or backward in time, this timepiece demonstrated a different chronology. The open secret of the clock, naked for all to see, was that we were only going in circles. (199)

Here there was no speech or language, and there was no love; no one to say: You are beautiful, John; no one to forgive him, no matter what his sun; no one to heal him, and lift him up. No one: father and mother looked backward, Roy was bloody, Elisha was not there. (212)
