A comprehensive yet digestible beginning; focusing on the geology of Ohio and how and why it will shape both pre history and historical events.

Not bad- the author is very good at writing to make a point— then show that it’s a rhetorical device. Useful but can be a pain after the fourth or Fifth example.

Reading this new book by McCullough for my US Republic class. So far it has been an enjoyable read, easy to digest, yet full of information as in his style. The book is using sources not used as often by historians, Manasseh Cutlers diary for instance. This work hits home, as a native SE Ohioan, I have been to many of the locations he mentions as their in my own backyard.

Continuing onward in this journey has not only educated me— but also been a frustration. The author has now openly hinted at and “foreshadowed” the election that serves as the title for the book. While this is clever, it’s disappointing.

So far an interesting story, told primarily by cutting from and comparing the lives of Madison and Monroe. Weaving in and out periods of their lives that reflect- and contrast their upbringings. With foreshadowing future events. Both men had a similar yet radically different approach to the development of the nation they both fought to create.
