This is a VERY long book, it transpires.

The others were easy enough to read; this one is a little like wading through mud.

Will the elves invade already?

I was so looking forward to this based on premise and provenance - but it’s dull. Too long, too slow, two one-dimensional. Hopefully it picks up, but - so far - I don’t care about the characters or their success.

First time I read this, it was a DNF after the first chapter because I couldn’t get into it. This time, I’m hooked.

WHY HAS NOBODY MADE THIS A TV SHOW?! Apple, I’m looking at you!

I’m struggling with this. I love a police procedural or a spy thriller, but the dialogue feels deeply contrived.

This story is remarkable. The horror of being stolen is really piqued by the beautiful story of Kunta Kinte’s childhood and adolescence. Ultimately, his coming of age is stunted by his enslavement. Unapologetically brutal, this hides nothing about his experience.

I’m audiobooking this one - first time I’ve listened at 1x speed for a long time. Normally, I find it too slow (I tend to use 1.2x speed for everything), but hearing Captain Sisko read the story… I’m savouring every single word.

Still unsure where it’s going. Some very beautiful observations on the nature of humanity, perspective and insignificance in the face of the vastness of space and nature - but… nothing much is going on.

Now THIS is a winner well-deserved. Hooked.

A slow start to this one. Unsure yet where it’s going.

How this didn’t win the Booker is beyond me.

I’ve learned a significant amount in this section of the book, perhaps more than I had considered previously. #IYKYK

This, so far, is AMAZING.

Took a minute to get into, but so far very interesting.
