My dad collected these back when they first came out in the late 80s and they ended up with me after he died. I’ve been meaning to read them for years but knew the two hefty volumes would take many, many hours to get through. Having just started, I’m struck by just how well-written this is. I think I’m about to disappear down a rabbit hole!

Loved this book when I was 20. Three-and-a-half decades later, the battered and creased paperback that accompanied me to the other side of the world and back has been calling from my bookshelves. It’ll be interesting to discover how the older, sadder, dubiously wiser, definitely more crumpled me gets on with this old friend.
