“In the South, politeness is a way of life. [...] We’re taught to swallow our anger and hold our tongues rather than speak out of turn or insight conflict. [...] Argument is to be avoided at all costs, especially when there is a power differential, or when the topic is heated and controversial. [...] Above all we are made to understand that talking back is profoundly disobedient and disrespectful.”

There’s too much politics in this book. I don’t read fantasy for the politics. Worse, it’s not even interesting politics, but instead flat transparent regurgitations of political stereotypes relayed by boring characters that I officially don’t give a f*ck about anymore.

If I actually finish the thing it’ll be sunk cost self-victimization.

This book is supposed to be the big amazing finish, but I'm honestly just tired. It feels wrong to fault a book centering on the looming apocalypse for not being more fun, but it's currently pretty depressing.

The first book was dark enough but also had sassy thieves, true friendships, and daring cons. Lately, it's just the burden of rule, compromise, division, addiction, and despair.
