A forbidden zone of magic which is forbidden for dark and mysterious reasons which our protagonist, who is curious about everything, is satisfied to leave forbidden because reasons? I wonder if this will become a later plot point in which she uses said forbidden zone. 🙄

These magicians are petty, grumpy, vindictive, and use a lot of big words to argue over trivial matters. It makes for great comedy.

"Sir Ghoul, your ugliness is inspiring! Pray give us our lives so that we may appall others with the tale!"

These 'situations' never work. Just let people have vague knowledge instead of trying to go for the shock factor of the character never encountering an everyday thing.

Always the problem with trying to describe someone who has never seen everyday objects before. She had never seen stairs, or books. But somehow compared someone to a wrestler. Why even set these scenarios up.

The illustrations really add to the atmosphere

Does the cringey bullshit contrived romantic subplot come to an end soon? It's testing my patience and tolerance of second hand embarrassment.

This is so incredibly dull. The writing is so slow, nothing happens, the things that happen are without reason.

3/4 through the book, and Rin is just getting worse. She has now become an eternal victim. Constantly angry and arguing, but never actually doing nothing, just righteous indignant outrage over everything, minor or major.

Protip: awkward manufactured moment in the dialog? Interrupt by having a loud sound pierce the calm or shatter the morning or somesuch. No need to think the conversation through!

Feels weak in many places especially characters. Suddenly nezha and her form the perfect fighting pair with a hand wave.
Altan is stoic and aloof suddenly he's chummy and talkative. No consistency.
Everyone is impossibly beautiful.

75% through the book and still can't get over these stupid names which resemble the sounds made when clearing a clogged nose or high and mighty lords scoffing at peasants. The author had a clear choice to do something, anything else, but chose this anyway.

It's so funny watching all of these ceremonies and rituals, people pretending to be holy and humble. Everyone jostling in factions vying for power. The whole organisation gets called out too, it's full of corruption and hubris that exists solely out of a sense of its own self importance but they carry on with these things anyway.

Feels so long... The writing is fascinating. An archaic style but set far in the future and gives a wonderful sense of disorientation and timelessness

Absolutely packed with biology, anthropology, ecology and other sciences. It is not light reading but slow down, pay attention, quite rewarding and insightful.
