I'm honestly wondering the same thing.

Now I'm mad. She was already pregnant and this part could've easily been avoided if the author hadn't deliberately chosen to change that in her 1800's life. All I can think is that that choice was made by the author with the sole desire to include this horrific scene. This book is malicious and any attempt at feminist/progressive messaging is ruined by that.

The scenes in the 1800's are dragging this book down a lot. I'm starting to imagine her husband being in her position instead since it doesn't feel like there's much to work with in her story. I don't know much about him yet, but a male conservative wanting to go back to "the good ol days" being humbled would feel a lot less mean spirited. Or at least have it happen to both of them.

Hardly into this book and already horrified by the fact that Kathleen Hannah is holding back on sharing all the horrible things she went through. If it's already this bad what isn't she sharing....

Also, having to write an essay about why you're mature enough to be able to make the choice not to have a baby despite being considered underaged enough to need parental consent is insane.

Idk if this is my kind of weird or empty shock value. When I read the synopsis I was kind of expecting the "terrorist boyfriend" to be a Tyler Durden type since that would actually say something and don't love how he's just a bad stereotype. Also not loving how Wes is depicted so far. I don't want the loving pov of a creep dating a high schooler unless it's transparently critical of him. Hope things start to shift.

I feel like Phillip sees a red flag and says to himself "I'm going to just totally ignore that and let it push my impulsive behavior".

Phillip, I kind of feel like none of this would've happened if you ever spent time with someone you weren't related to. Do you not even have friends?? (Cousins don't count)

I kind of want to put this down... but Daphne du Maurier has proven me wrong before... Really hoping this picks up soon.

"The instructor told me I had a natural talent [...] and I could earn my black belt by the time I was out of school." Based off her fighting style it was probably Judo/Jiu Jitsu. Be. Serious. Mark.
