Reading and discussing the first short story was like a gift from a generous writer.

Very enjoyable read. There are multiple character threads (12) but it’s not confusing or disruptive to the flow of the story. Tremain doesn't try to impress you with overly arcane word choices, yet uses interesting pairings of adjectives to keep the writing fresh. The primary characters are Peter Claire and Emilia. Christian, King of Denmark and his consort Kirsten are the main secondary characters.

The author tells the story in such a clear and easy to follow manner that I am zipping through the book. He includes some details on the history and depth of art thefts but stays close to the main characters. The only part that doesn’t flow well are the assessments of the psychiatrists who “assessed” the culprits.

A fragmented style of narrative that doesn’t offer much real insight into her life other than her movements. There’s some references to her shyness but it’s not the immersive historical fiction I enjoy the most.

Lots of characters to keep track of, but the teenage boy dialogue and pranks are entertaining.

A great writer with a terrible story to tell. From the beginning this expedition was ill-conceived and left to incompetents to plan. It’s hard to enjoy the story because so much of it is ludicrous. And so far, TR shows his weaknesses, namely being restless and reckless. It’s like he was running from something all his life. Now that they are nearly at the mouth of the River of doubt, the real horror begins.
