I knew there was a reason that kept me reading this book- commissioner Lin zexu was standing and talking to the protagonist. The author also made a mistake, lin’s nickname should be 青天 not 晴天, as he was regarded as fair and determined by the people.

Hmm… 1. Did the author get a deal from the cellphone company? I got so tired of hearing the brand name 2). The detective needs to drive to the tech guy’s house to read a text? It’s 2025, people use smart phones in 2025. 3). The detective/consultant does ALL the leg work - drives two hours to get to a park, then drives two hours to the dungeon.

Audiobook… another one by Julian Whelan

Why did I start reading this at this hour? The first story is so sad…wish I knew before I started

The whole system is very relatable, more than expected, comrades, pioneers, red scarf, etc. Like two peas in a pod

The grass is always greener on the other side- the dad thought he couldn’t have free speech in China so he came to the US and became a soulless moving body instead. Honestly if the daughter is smart as she is now, she would’ve made to Yale anyway, if the parents had chosen to stayed. But no, the consensus was that the moon was bigger and brighter in America.

I’m not sure if I want to continue… “one kind of rice provides for hundred kinds of people” I’m also fine with the Chinese phrases since I speak the language but i still find it disrupting the flow
