Vi_llains is starting Petals of Blood
Went into it with some trepidation as I hadn’t loved Wizard of the Crow by him (although my criticisms of it make a lot more sense upon the discovery it was published in serialised form). Well, I shouldn’t have. I am enthralled

I keep forgetting what I’ve read the day before. Doesn’t bode well for the final rating I fear

I’m pretty sure that the mc being a creep is kind of the point, however I’m not. ecstatic about reading from his point of view. Japan’s specific kind of misogyny is particularly jarring to me for some reason

The homoerotic tension between you (a bitter fellow with religious ocd who desperately wants to kill his brother) and your best friend (a strange who convinced you have already been saved by God and therefore are exempt from sinning and who might or might not be Satan)

Gothic authors really have a thing for making Satan the funniest character in their novel…

I’ve been promised serial murders and metafiction with this one. Will be seriously disappointed if this is not the case

Most modern literature nowadays wishes it were an over-the-top British gothic novel with some weird conflicting gender policies

It is truly a testament to my love for literature that each book I tackle seems to be more incomprehensible than the ones that came before (absolutely complimentary)

Vi_llains is starting The Jakarta Method: Washington's Anticommunist Crusade and the Mass Murder Program that Shaped Our World
It is crazyyyy how even an author progressive enough to define the changes of regime orchestrated by the US around the world for the better part of the xx century for what they were (genocides, mass murders and acts of terrorism) will still manage to sneak in a whole paragraph where they suck it up to capitalism. cmon man…

Not a fan of the language used in certain passages, calling the leaders overthrown by the CIA “naive”/“inexperienced” or deeming their progressive reforms “political missteps”. Had a ball reading about the Indonesian sex tape fiasco tho. Truly a way to spend US tax money

Being compared to Regal from Fitz’s pov in this series essentially means being targeted by the Grim Reaper, however I want to hope Hobb won’t pull the exact same thing she does with this archetype for the fifth time in a row

Robin Hobb is literally the anti-JK Rowling because she’ll hit you with earth-shattering misogyny and then not even 10 pages later she’ll show more innate understanding for gender fluidity than the vast majority of fantasy authors. I wanna pick her brains so bad it hurts

Vi_llains is starting Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth
Sometimes I think my inability to enjoy perfectly fine genre fiction is due to some kind of internalized snobbery (which might be!) but then I find pieces like this, which are wonderfully written on top of being just pure fun and I am reminded that I am, indeed, capable to enjoy a good thriller. The author just has to know how to write
