nervous, stressed, panicked. I need a break

I'm not certain that I can finish this book.
Jude has one happy moment, something he longed and dreamed for happened and yet, on the next page, the author destroys all hope by condemning him to his torments.

I don't see why I should continue to read this when there is no hope for Jude.
720 pages of characters being tortured by their author, I don't know that it's for me.
