The author admittedly has relatively few facts to work with. He fleshes out the book with history lessons (an entire chapter summarizes Civil War events affecting Missouri, Arkansas, and Indian Territory while barely mentioning Belle Starr herself), speculation about what individuals were thinking or feeling, and rhetorical flourishes (drawing back the black velvet curtain on these events).
