Bryson accurately words my initial feelings on Washington when I moved here: "You feel as if you are in some agreeable provincial city, but then you turn a corner and come up against the headquarters of the FBI or the World Bank or the IMF and you realize what an immensely important place it is."

Bryson is alternately extremely offensive and very funny (sometimes both). Beware of modern sensibilities bumping uncomfortably on some of his humor.
