So far not bad! I do kinda wish I could read more of it in one sitting though.

Almost there! And just in time for the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 considering this book takes place on the Moon.

Page 217 was a great place to leave off last night. Chapter 28 had a nice little cliffhanger at the end and Chapter 29 really picked up the heat. Now, everything is starting to come together and I am starting to see why it was necessary to start off slow.

The story doesn't feel like a chore to read through anymore, thank God! While Leonardo Black's chapters were never bad chapters (the dying man's hunt for Leonardo Black as well as Chapter 12 helped a lot), the rest of the story picks up somewhere in the 110's.

A 5-star rating is not possible for this book, but neither is a 1-star at this point.

I've barely started the book and already I'm getting Tarantino-esque vibes from this book. Not that it's a bad thing because I enjoy a good Tarantino film, but just something to note. The travelogue chapter kind of slows it down a bit, but I'll read on and see how this book plays out.

So I'm at a bit of a fork at where I stand with the story. On one hand, there are parts of the story I feel like it gives it life in the form of humor. On the other, that humor comes from its side plot because the main investigation feels like it's just a non-presence in the book and just kina there in the background.

Eh idk so far. I mean, it isn't bad, but it seems kinda average so far. Nothing new really brought to the table thus far.

So now all of a sudden those first 5 chapters I went hard on make a world more sense than they did less than 15 pages ago. Now I'm curious as to how this is going to play out. Also, do I see this alien planet maintaining a sense of karma or was I just imagining things not too long ago?

Maybe I've been too hard on the book at the beginning. It took a bit, but this is actually beginning to grow on me. The world-building and character-building is good so far, and that's good news since I do want to like this book given the author's credentials (and the fact I shared a birthday with him despite me being much younger).

Only 2 chapters in and already I'm not impressed with how long it takes to read each page. There's about 550 words a page, but at least it isn't impossible to follow what's going on (which happens to be about the only positive about this book so far).

A lot of updates in a short period of book, I know, but I've got to a point in which the story is beginning to make some sense, or at least I hope so. Apparently what I was looking for was a form of a black dwarf, but shouldn't those things still not exist yet for trillions of years? Either way, I'm happy that at least we found our "black sun".

Oops! Wrong page! Either way, my statement from the previous update about Rima stands, and <spoiler>I still think she's dumb to not question how Roak ended up as the other prisoner.</spoiler>

Moments like this are why I question a mother's intelligence. <spoiler>I get she's trying to protect the kid, but I have a few questions about Rima. First, how did she know about the bomb? Second, she knows there are two suspects and that one of them is Roak, but then why didn't she question how Roak became a prisoner in the first place? If she actually used her brain, she'd know her son was right.</spoiler>

Five chapters down and still no black sunning. I wanted to read why there's a black sun goddammit, not five chapters of people being weirdos.

Despite me apparently sucking at reading children's books, this is so far really good. I'm getting a feel for who Mila is and what kind of life she lived out in the ocean. Maybe despite my failures, I'm glad I revisited this.

And here I am now reading what was the bane of my existence when I was a kid and now I'm beginning to understand why I could never pass this book's AR Test. All the same, because this was that impossible book for me back in the day, there will always be a kind of hollowing respect I have for this.

"Go away," said Mary. "This is our tree."

That scene, starting with that line, is the number one reason why I fell in love with the movie and why I love this book. Even in the crushing grips of isolation, the symbolism and power the Lisbon girls show in this scene is one that will stick with me for the rest of my life. What a beautiful scene!

I read a bit more on the way hone until I couldn't any more because I was too tired to continue on without succumbing to the very little sleep I had before I began to read this. Rest assured, I am enjoying this book and can't wait to pick back up with it later.

For what Vinge had to work with, so far it's not a bad job. I feel like some aspects of the movie come to life when translated into a novel.

About all I can understand of the book is how this book helps back up why Conrad is considered one of the English language's best writers. That being said, I don't like its pacing and I have noticed this book get racist with its wording at times, so I'm beginning to suspect I won't like this. Well-written otherwise, but yeah...

I've watched the movie, but I don't remember it. I will note however that it didn't do well in the box office an didn't get favorable reviews, so I will try my best to cut Vinge some slack.

I've heard good things about this book from its back cover, and it's apparently a threshold for symbolism, so I'll give this a chance. The fact that this can have about 565 words in a page (I counted that number before I began to read) scares me despite this being 72 pages.

Despite the length of the book, it actually goes by quite fast. Once I picked up where I left off some time ago, I already went through more than 100 pages in the first day of reading it again. Hoping to finish tonight if not tomorrow. :)

This is starting to get intense from a mystery standpoint, but at the same time, it's not in-your-face intense. Rather, it's subtle and now I'm beginning to question what kind of people Natalie's family really is.

Regardless, Emma is proving time and time again why she is a great female protagonist that I'm really finding myself care for as a reader.
