D.L. Thurston is on page 56 of 338 of Neptune's Brood (Freyaverse, #2)
Can't say I ever expected to so thoroughly enjoy a book starring a historiographer of accounting unraveling a massive economic scam. But here we are.

I judged this book by its cover so many times when it first came out, it's odd to finally be reading it.

Most Mira Grant books have a moment when I start sneaking off early to bed to get more reading time in...then immediately regret reading them just before going to sleep.

I'm not sure I like this as much as the Newsflesh trilogy...but that's a high bar to clear.

"Buy me," a cuddly voice said, a couple inches from her ear.
She turned her head and looked into the glassy eyes of a large doll. "I can pee, drink, and give birth to small dolls," the bland voice told her. "My hair can grow. I am exactly like a small girl. My temperature can be set at ten different degrees. Take me to mommy and tell her you can't live without me. Scream if she doesn't buy me."

Human ends up on Mars and quickly learns the local dialect. Seems a common trope from the early days of science fiction, seen here and in several of the Save the Sci-Fi books I've read.

Only of the 1939 Retro Hugo nominees available on Kindle. Which makes it as good a place to start as any as I track down the other titles.
