"With a longing that almost split him open, he thought of her handing him a bit of smoked hock out of her dish. He remembered just how she held it—clumsy-like, in three fingers, but with so much affection. No words, just picking up a bit of meat and holding it out to him. “And then the tears rushed down his cheeks, to make a bouquet under his chin.” ; __________ ;

"Why, human beings, if they put their minds to it, could better themselves. She didn't mean that a peasant, to give an example, would be capable from one day to the next of running NASA, or even of working for NASA, but who could say that the peasant's son, guided by his father's love and example, might not end up working there one day?" how can smth this tiny but hopeful come out of NOWHERE like this. god

reading murakami for me is always this really...otherworldly experience, for every one of his novels, esp bc i have the tendency to read his stuff only at night and in the early early morning - but so far (and idk where i am bc i'm reading this weirdly formatted ebook version) idt anything he's written so far as struck me as so completely unsettling and WEIRD as the teacher from yamanashi's letter..

interesting how my 14 year old self was soooooo fascinated by the movie and the miniseries, but now that i'm finally reading the novel five years later all i feel is a casual? enjoyment reading through at a really fast speed, and acknowledging that the poignancy is there, but not.....caring
