Add in the 30 or so pages of the mother's letters.
I understand the allure of the book, but it feels like a collection of ideas that serve as the core driving force, while the prose itself varies stylistically depending on who's in charge, but remains lacking.
Some of these ideas could be done more deftly with just better handling of the words themselves. I get it, but also... Meh.
