Perhaps I'm, ahem, a little late reading this. But the first chapter really sorta sucks you in. A quasi-YA, dystopian, post-apocalyptic story with hints of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery"? Yeah. I can dig it. And I really liked the little end-of-the-first-chapter twist.

Hiaasen is nothing if not readable. My dad got me into him when I told him I'd been reading Tim Dorsey, and he was like "Isn't that the Florida guy who ripped off Carl Hiaasen?" And I was like "Huh?" Now, I like them both. Two really funny guys with very different styles.
