This story gets better and better. Surprised by references to Rhiannon Giddens. I will never look at Greensboro, NC the same.

The author articulates a very similar way I felt visiting the Charleston Museum as she visiting the former Oxmoor Plantation.

'I looked up at Mom, and she whispered in my ear, "being yourself is a gift to others around you. It's a gift to the people who love you. And it's a way to remember the people who came before you, who made you what you are."

This story is frightening. The dangers faced leading up to the integration of Central High School is violent.

I like that Chien Shiung was not afraid of challenges and was interested in "self-learning"

So the way this graphic novel is written, there is no doubt that the Civil War was fought on the issue of slavery and continued expansion of slavery into the growing union. It is a very harsh reality check.

So I have read that Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass never met in person before, so the liberty of the author in that part grounds me that this is a work of fiction. I am going to try to verify their meeting when I travel to the Harriet Tubman historic site this summer. The other striking thing about this version is the admitted cowardice Frederick Douglass has about himself.

The only thing I could say about the story of Frederick Douglass is that narrative so deep in pain but also in triumph. His statements are poetically profound! He is still and perhaps will always be my History Hero!

"They beat me to prove their superiority."
"Fear, uncertainty, and mistrust had grabbed hold of me and, I had realized, had made me a different kind of slave."
Frederick Douglass' journey to freedom is a very painful recount. I just wonder if in hearing his story, WLG and other abolitionists propagandized him to advance their cause. It is amazing to me his perseverance.

Frederick Douglass is one of my History Heroes (Benjamin Franklin is another); but this graphic novel is just as potent as his autobiography in conveying his life as an enslaved person. I understand why slavery persisted in America for so long; but I do not understand the cruelty and inhumane treatment of a human being. How could slaveholders and the like consider themselves as upstanding citizens?

I would like to know what is the status of Dadaab today? This book was published in 2020. When did Omar come to America? At the point where I am in the story now, he is 17 and has lived more than half his life at the refugee camp. This story is so interesting and bitter-sweet. I really like how he keeps coming back to the point that love is greater than any sorrow or circumstance.
I'm Finished as of 4/19/2022.

This is an eye-opening look at Omar's life. I would have never learned about the life of Somali refugees had I not happened upon this book. I honestly am ignorant of the lives of refugees. I can't say with all my information-seeking about true stories, that this is the first time I read about refugees. I did watch the movie, The Lost Boys of Sudan, a couple of times.

This is an interesting novel. As an elementary school librarian currently, I would not recommend it for my age group, but I can see it being appropriate for upper grades in spite of the violent references. It tackles relevant issues and that's important to all people of all cultures. Don't understand why book banning is trendy now, but this one should not be banned.

Very interesting storyline. Why this book is being banned when it is some people's current reality is beyond me. It has to be for ignorance, pure ignorance.

I love it when young children express adult wisdom, or wisdom that even adults have a hard time grasping! Like Delsie saying, "I learned it's the storms that really change us. Not the blue-sky days."
