“To be clear, slave ship insurance underwriters were an integral part of a system that unleashed enormous suffering on millions of Africans across centuries, but in this case, their coldly calculated financial interests were aligned with the small number of people in England who sought to abolish slavery.”

“Patriarchy, like any system of domination (for example, racism), relies on socializing everyone to believe that in all human relations, there is an inferior and a superior party, one person is strong, the other week, and that it is therefore natural for the powerful to rule over the powerless.”

“If [non-Christian organizations] have a better sense of protecting the lives of the vulnerable and understand grace enough to see the vulnerable… is that not an indictment of us? Do they have a better understanding of the heart of God than we do [in the American Church]?”

Enjoying this book so much. Extremely accessible and well articulated commentary on issues like racial justice. Should be required reading for all white Evangelicals.

“Do not be afraid to hear the observations of people outside the faith community on how society is failing its vulnerable people. Respect the image of God enough to believe victims can honestly share their victimization without knowing Jesus.”

Excellent discussion thus far detailing the importance of throwing away (hurriedly) any version of God that is not “monosyllabic” — “Love”

I appreciate the use of the thoughts of other mystics from diverse faith background such as Hinduism, etc.
