I can always tell how much I love a book I'm reading when I start slowing my pace. This is so so good.

This is a devastating book. It’s rising to my top ten of all time reads.

Really enjoying this until she gets to Todos Santos Island, Mexico and seems fascinated by "all the narcotics floating in the sea" and the dangerous crime. Maybe this is what Trump read when referring to Mexicans. I may just skip over this section because it's truly agitating how she reduces Mexico to a tired stereotype.

just finished the Hunger For Mens Eyes chapter which I'm guessing might be her most complex and charged section of the book. and i understand why. I'm ten years older than the author and there's a line where she writes, "I have never talked to a black woman about the loss of her virginity and heard her describe it as anything other than traumatic" and my heart is breaking!!

I love the writing in this.

This book sucks you in and has an intense pace....And then two thirds in it just starts plodding along. Pages upon pages of stalling towards what's becoming more and more predictable :/

This book is surprisingly amazing.

i came up for air after the black mother of four gets sentenced to jail for her first offense. she assisted in a robbery when she was facing eviction and needed to feed her children.

Cannot put this book down.

i enjoy starting the year off with good detective novels. I finished 2016 with the new Walter Mosley. Starting 2017 with vintage Lehane.

This is the best book I've read since Morrisons Song of Solomon, Faulkners Absalom. I both do and don't understand why it didn't get nearly enough press as it should have. This is required reading.

i love when the characters become so real you forget these aren't actual people in your life!

i do not give passes to great writers who don't check their racist blind spots. there are 2 black characters in this novel. neither are crucial to the story meaning the author could have and perhaps should have kept them out if all she could do for them is lazy, tired stereotyping and, worse, a passive aggressive way of highlighting her more central characters. see comments for full post.
