Adenosine build up and the circadian rhythm are the two key factors in sleep. Sleep is universal among all animals. NREM and REM sleep work together for emotional regulation. REM sleep is crucial for the development of the prefrontal cortex. Caffeine has a half-life of seven hours; caffeine blocks adenosine receptors.

The level these comrades were organizing is beyond anything I’ve read about in the history of the USA. Organizing prisoner exchanges between the American and Vietnamese government, Panther leaders assassinated, jailed, and exiled, and the building of a North American National Liberation Front. Marxism-Leninism is really the way.

Grateful to have heard of this book. Useful primary source for the study of the Panthers.

Dr. Khan recounts his personal experience as a disease detective in Zaire, UAE, Russia, and the USA so far in the book. Interesting and revealing of his world outlook.

So far it’s just been his anecdotes about his work in Vancouver with patients dealing with addiction.

Similar to Dr. Van der Kolk, Dr. Maté writes about developmental trauma as a key factor in the pathology of mental disorders. Dr. Maté goes further and begins to critique capitalism and discusses class warfare.

The chapter KKK Feminism discusses the activities of Klanswomen and the contradiction in their relationship with Klansmen. Klanswomen wanting equality in the Klan and also wanting control over their own bodies through contraception. In one event Gordon describes a situation where Klanswomen invite the most prominent advocate for birth control at the time to speak at one of their lecture halls.

I like Gordon’s presentation that she’s not neutral or attempting to be. I agree with her perspective that the racism of the KKK is not an aberration of American values. I argue that it’s foundational to the American settler colony. Currently she’s discussing the structure of the second KKK, how it changed and grew after it’s creation in the late 1910s. Basically a racist pyramid scheme.

Discussion of childhood development, attachment theory, capitalism, colonialism, indigenous epistemology, defining trauma as it is used in the text, connection between the mind and body, and the connection between the individual and the collective.
