A nesting doll of a book, revealing its secret slowly and expertly as the author draws you into the real story beyond unreliable narrators. It’s also a study in mental health, and how society makes it quite difficult for people, especially individuals living on the margins, to get the help they need.

A novella that packs a lot of punch in a short amount of time. I didn’t love the ending (horror novels seem more vulnerable to this aspect of story than other genres), but the author gets points for the twist.

This is the first book I’ve read by Jones. His writing style takes some getting used to. It’s jaunty and lacks fluency, almost intentionally so the reader doesn’t move too quickly.

Crouch nicely balances the science of time/space travel with the emotional elements of what it would mean to leave your loved ones, to experience first hand the path not taken.
