only on the introduction but it’s introduced the concept of colonialism/genocide can happen not just via elimination but also assimilation. reminds me of something i heard at a conference recently abt how the worst/most violent kind of colonialism is that of the imagination where it is so thorough that one cannot imagine a world beyond it

gorgeous gorgeous book i am so deep into it and getting swept up in it. it is jarring each time i put it down and step out of the world because all its shapes and columns feel so real i could reach out and touch it

too many israel references already i fear to see where this will go. regardless, this has been pirated so the money shan’t be going to the author 😘

i couldn’t speed read this even if i wanted to. each short story ends with the same impact as a 700 page novel and it demands attention and care. it’s beautiful

breaks down the role of language in india and how its separation and amalgamation simultaneously serves to empower and disenfranchise the minority population. such a clever and witty analysis on a topic that deserves all the nuance she affords it. adore my own irony reading it in english (embodying the point of this chapter perhaps)

i wish the world building and characters were explained well enough for me to be shocked by the plot twists. now i’m just nodding and smiling like i understand why the protagonist is so mad abt the betrayal (by who? for what? im none the wiser)

god give me strength i’ve started this like four separate times and i finally gotten past the point where i last stopped and the author has only JUST mentioned the protagonist’s eye colour. disregarding this info immediately bc it doesn’t line up with what i had in my mind

discovering i need to do more research into history of the conflict between protestants and catholics in ireland if i am to understand the central symbolism of the book…….
