Mel (Epic Reading) > Recent Status Updates

It’s too bad this feels like younger writing than it should. The magic setup is interesting enough and the plot is fine (if a bit trope-y but what isn’t in fantasy). I’m still just finding the level of language to be a bit too simple… if that makes sense

I can see why many folks felt this read like YA/teen. Even the sex scene seems a little toned down…

Alright… so now that I guessed the two major reveals correctly… what are we gonna do for the next half of the book?!
lol.

I’ve got a theory it might be bunnies… (I have a theory… and it made me think of Buffy but not vampires, lol)

Really like the swapping POVs. Tried the audio and good narrator.
Prefer our knight and amnesiac gal’s storyline so far. But Rhoda’s will come around I’m sure.

Anyone else having trouble scrolling in the app and suddenly the ratings are coming up or being set when you don’t mean them to? I can’t seem to scroll the same way I used to without it happening. So while I appreciate partial stars I’m not sure it’s worth the annoyance…

Dual POV. Let’s see where this goes

I’m not super familiar with this OG fairy tale. So I’m gonna let Carey do what she does best and take me on a ride without worrying about anything but her amazing writing. :)

I was gonna give up… and I still barely care but I guess enough to find out what is up with this forest…

Interesting… but slowed back down. :(

Won’t lie… was getting close to giving up on this as if was just annoying and boring. However finally we are getting somewhere. I also swapped to audio and gotta say narrators creepy voice for a monster/villain definitely gave me some shivers (plus it’s dark, late and windy outside so you know just asking for spookiness factor to increase)

Canadian author!

Went and bought myself a print copy. Library one is going back (has 30+ holds) and now I can savour this without concern. :)

When you’ve barely cracked the book and are already planning on buying a print copy and are emotionally invested. How do some authors do it? Lee is incredible and I need to prioritize Jade City after this one.

“Fuck Earth.”
I like it. Strong start!

Well I screwed up, lol. I picked up Threshing Day and then the very next day, six library holds came up at once… that’s an epic screw-up! lol.
Especially in the same week I started a new job. Apparently I’m going to be doing nothing else over Thanksgiving weekend (Canada) but reading!

This is absolutely nothing like Whitten’s other books. It’s full-on brutally explicit horror. I feel like it should come with a hefty warning! I’m not sad, just concerned some may not be ready for it if they don’t read a lot of gory ickiness. lol.

Full blown horror… surprised there’s still so much book left given we seem to be at a climatic moment already..

I’m definitely ready for the cannibalism fad to be over…

New photo (because the old one was almost 7 years old) to go with my new job starting tomorrow… but nervous. It’s a big position compared to some I’ve had before. Here’s hoping I can crush it!!! 😅

Started out on audio with this one. A bit odd the children don’t all seem to be real ‘trouble’ by what I’d consider worthy of a camp… but I suppose others have different standards…

Ha! It’s like Whitten heard my complaint earlier and knew she had to plug up the plot hole. Well played!! This has really ramped up to some true horror!

Jumping the queue… uh yeah! Lol.
My copy of this is gorgeous!! Colour dragon art throughout, sprayed edges, silver cover… yeah they know what to do to get us to buy a skinny book for full price! lol.

So… I’m a little pushed that our MC is able to just ‘push past’ her claustrophobia with breathing. Yes to a degree many people can do that… but a very bad fear will bring you to your knees and become a panic attack. So if she gets in that submarine underwater and doesn’t panic I’m gonna be a bit annoyed…

This book can’t decide what it is. Is it a longing romance or a paranormal political mantra… I know it can be both but right now it seems like it’s a little of both and not quite enough in either way.

Met the Canadian artist who did this book last week at Edmonton Expo. Each and every page is an original watercolour painting!!! And this book is huge. It’s an impressive feat years in the making.

Nothing super special here, but good enough and an easy read so far.
I should be cranking out other books but I’m chilling in cozy(ish) land instead.
