Unfortunately the chapter numbers lay under the first paragraphs. Quite distracting to have to drop out of the world to shift between the layers to read the actual words. Frustrating!!

Rough read.. I can handle an empath as a nurse.. and her inheriting a demon killing weapon BUT... the jumping from shock to sex to kill to kidnap reads like a teen boy graphic novel... odd juxtapositions, no logic, just s willingness to be dragged along... this one is seriously pushing my limits... I have big doubts on finishing it..

Thumbs down... I won't be finishing this one. Too violent, too coarse... a noir magic visit to a PI type/mage for hire venture that reads like a Vietnam vet's PTSD nightmares vomited across the page. I had hoped for a Spenser for Hire meets Harry Dresden adventure and I did not find it here. Sigh...

While interesting the story is choppy. It is disconcerting to have a character appear from nowhere. The book is also heavy on regional slang... sigh, Wikipedia nor my OED have definitions which leaves me confused.

I am giving up. This is more a Victorian collage than a period mystery. I am disappointed and underwhelmed. I return to the works of Tasha Alexander and others, who do the job more deftly and entertainingly.

I am impressed. The layers, the world building is delightful. Usually I avoid 'dystopian future' books, I tend to find them depressing. So far this novel has done nothing but intrigue me. I had planned on a nap today, but I need to finish this first. Pass the caffeine, I need to see what happens next.
