Here we are, full-circle god is dead…Why I started my forays into Nietzsche with this, I will never know, but I have so many regrets…A total waste, but I’m almost done here…

To give credit where credit is due, I’m disgusted, I’m rolling my eyes at these characters, I have no patience as a reader, I’m exasperated, but I NEED to get to the bottom of the Mayfair mystery. It takes a damn good author to keep you hooked when you’ve become an antagonistic reader.

I’m at the part where Michael and Rowan part and he winds up in New Orleans…So far, I’ve found it interesting until I got to their mushy romance and it’s giving major ick…I don’t know if I can recover and appreciate these characters again for the rest of the story.

I’m at the part where St. Clair dies like a dumbass having neglected to make provisions for all the people (ie. slaves) depending on him, after promising them freedom…Ophelia keeps her promise at least…Ugh…

I can see why it’s controversial…I’m at the part where Eva is dying and frankly, I’m so over this paternalistic, preachy BS. I loathe the St. Clairs. All of then, even the saintly Eva. I wish Topsy burned them all down. I HATE the racism that gets passed off as compassion. That’s my honest entitled white lady emotional reaction thus far. In the other hand, I’m curious about other voices than Stowe’s

Mistakes were made here…I thought I had enough background research for this to make sense, but unfortunately, it’s still comes across as unreadable word salad. Still, I’m slowly combing through it, trying to pick up the themes and ideas that reoccur in his philosophy, trying to keep an open mind. I should have started with Beyond Good and Evil, would have been a better use of time.

We all knew it was going to happen, but did anyone else feel completely devastated by poor sick little Beth fading away? I feel like there’s some truth to that scene, sadly.

I’m suddenly back on team Lucy…Mr.Paul Emmanuel needs to be restrained and medicated. I know he’s Madame Beck’s cousin, but the man is out of control…

All those ghastly Protestant themes, the melodramatic imagery and the long, pedantic, self-righteous inner monologues of Lucy Snowe and for what? A story so trite and uninteresting, characters so flat and constrained…I’ll read it till the end, and I’m sorry to those who enjoyed it, but I don’t see what you are seeing.

Okay, so far I’m getting most of what is happening in the story…Some of those long excursions into Lucy’s mind have me completely lost as to whether she is being poetic or speaking about actual events, but I’ve so far had the will to reread most of the passages that are unclear. Lucy is very human, a bit of a jerk and she can be so annoying and depressing. There is some encouraging character development tho

I’m at the chapter called « Villette » and I have so many regrets about this book choice…So far, I can’t stand its tawdry, obnoxiously meek main character…I mean, one has to give it a chance, Jane Eyre was such a masterpiece and had some similar elements, but so far yuck…

Alright, I cheated and found out that Lucy Snowe is a bit of an unreliable witness, but I’ve come across no other spoilers…She describes Polly so harshly that I had to look up whether Polly had some sort of stigmatized visible disability for that time period.Poor Polly is only six and my hunch is that Miss Snowe is jealous of Graham’s affection for her which is also weird and inappropriate because he’s 16…
