Delightful, awkward, and funny

Reading for self-publishing research. But also I have read several romances set on tropical islands now, so maybe I’m just kidding myself. ;)

I really enjoyed this series

So far I’m really enjoying this book and the story of her life but it’s surprisingly long. 50% of the way into it and we’re only at 1963.

Only halfway through, but I can say that it’s very good. All the best parts of The Martian. None of the awkward parts of Artemis. Recommend for anyone who liked The Martian.

It took my awhile to get the book. But now that I see what she’s doing, I’m appreciating it more. Also she’s writing with a playful tone that is fun. I can imagine this read aloud back in the day and her observations probably would have regularly cracked up the room. Though it’s a different experience reading 150 years later.

Steampunk Star Trek? This was good fantasy, a genre I am reading more and more of.

Took a break to read some other things. I still want to finish by the end of the year.

Trying out Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander without Steig. So far it’s working pretty well.

Grant has just won the Civil War. And there are still 400 pages to go! Might take a break to read some fiction.

And it’s been good so far! The narrative of his military campaigns was top notch.

It’s been ages since I’ve picked up an Agatha Christie book. This had me guessing throughout! They all seem to have a slow start but get better as they go.

This is the best of the trilogy. It’s overlong but every section has fascinating ideas in it. I sear, this one book has more “fictional science” (if you will allow the term) in it than a season of Star Trek. “Hard” sci fi fans should read this trilogy.

Rereading. GRRM is so good at establishing character. The first 100 pages of this book are great if you're interested in seeing how he establishes the characters that will drive the next few thousand pages of story.

Re-reading for research/craft purposes. But it is still quite a joy. Hammett is such an economist in his writing. He makes Hemingway look verbose.

Man. What characters! Scarlett and Rhett are so vivid. But holy god the racism is hard to take. Not the characters as much at Mitchell's. The Lost Cause-ism, the happy slaves were bad enough and then there was the Klan. Definitely a section of this book 2/3 of the way through that was just really hard to finish. But again: wow, are Scarlett and Rhett magnets to read.
