The dialogue feels stifled to me; would that be mainly in the translation or is it part of the writing? The main character feels quite immature for her age and judgmental. Obvious observations are constantly given the gravitas of epiphanies.
The one thing I am enjoying is the setting in Jombocho, which is very atmospheric.

I do hope the characters come to feel less one dimensional as the story goes on.

Gifted each other a book while in a bookshop during our holiday, which is fun to do anyway, now I'm eager to hear what she thinks of my pick for her (Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid) and what I think of this one - I think it's going to be a cozy read, transporting me back to Tokyo Japan 😊

I am having a hard time getting into the storytelling, since the characters don't pull me in and the backdrop is fascinating, but is also a lot and quite abstract / hard to understand. So I find that I still continue to read it, but in bursts, with (long) pauses, and have other type of stories on the side that I switch between. Let's see if I finish it.

I just love reading this book? I have more than once gone back a small or bigger amount to just read it again and don't really want it to end. Beautifully written and I'm so glad I picked up this "classic".

Not a great one to listen to, as you miss all the written references and they can only be described. Still enjoying this cross between a history lesson, linguistics deepdive and an adventurous queste.

compelling still, although I'm most interested in the characters I met in the last book, I don't care as much for the new plotlines (yet)
