Enjoying the insights into life in Haiti c. 1990.

Lawton is enormously inventive in his characterizations and in the richly detailed settings through which the characters troop in the piles of rubble that constitute post-WWII Berlin. The elaborately layered plot is developing nicely.

Funny and light. I'm reading on a Kindle so I get to look and many referenced paintings and sculptures that show up as a hot link. Fun.

Tricky plotting that has lots of punch.

McBain's formulaic procedurals and his sharply drawn cops always please me, this instance no less than all the others.

Engrossing story set in New England in the mid to late 17th century. One of the character's wonders what sort of nation can emerge from the interplay of heathens (the Native Americans, at that time) and the radicals (the Puritans). Still a good question.

Liked especially the language of Kentucky hill people--salty and funny.

Very engaging, offering lots of insight that I took to be the product of sound research into the operation of a backwoods V2 launch site. Vital leading woman on the English side and an equally vital German engineer.

Still don't know WHY I need all the "background" to main story of a murder trial. However, Turow's erudition and his feel for revealing details make the background interesting, even as I struggle to get a grip on its relevance.

This was a re-reading after about 45 years. It was both more and less than I remembered. Amazing how my reading context alters my reading.

Brisk and thorough; as chaotic as the time it chronicles.

In this early work, as with all I've read by le Carre, I was struck by the grace and elegance with which the viciousness of humankind is portrayed.

Finding that I'm skimming over lots of pages. The book approaches the end the way a freight train approaches a loading yard, very slowly with lots of twists and turns.

Halfway and my reader tells me the book will take another 9 hours. It's very looooooooong, but always engaging.
