Reaching page 1100 has taken so much time, and while the going has been slow, it has been rich and enjoyable. It's hard to stay awake reading this book, and sometimes I wish I never started, but it's a good one anyway. I find myself looking up pictures and places in Alaska now and love reading the history. I wonder if I would ever dare to read any of his other books. Only 175 pages left, and it's bittersweet.

It was a slow start, and I almost gave up, but holding out to about page 50 was a good choice. The beginning is slow because it starts at the very formation of Alaska and goes on for a while about tectonic plates and ancient vegetation, weather, and glaciers. Once animals and then people are introduced it really picks up. I'm loving how actual archeological finds are being woven together to create a story.
