"wartime existence without the crackly familiarity of Listen With Mother would have been unbearable." As a former Listen With Mother listener this makes me feel UNBELIEVABLY AGED.

well, she DESERVED that hangover. She sounds so much like a 15-year-old that I keep forgetting her alcohol intake is in fact legal.

'I noticed her diary stuffed into the outside compartment of her travelling case. She, like Gwendoline, obviously liked something sensational to read on the train.' I had this EXACT SAME THOUGHT before I read it. Clearly I am in tune with this narrator.

this has grown on me A LOT. I can kind of see *why* we had the slow start to which I objected. I still kind of object to it, and think it perhaps could be structured differently, but I get why the author chose to structure it the way she did.

she's OUT! hurrah! but her race to escape the russian army is as harrowing as her seven years of imprisonment...

thank god the whole thing isn't written in Aibileen's transliterated dialect or I would have to shoot myself.

after all the hype I am "kind a" disappointed in the eye-crossingly-difficult-to-read transliterated speech. Tanita Davis pulls off a similar dialect with so much more style and surety in Mare's War. Sighhhh... I am ALWAYS disappointed in books that get a lot of hype!

I had NO IDEA I was going to enjoy this so much. "Readers are fools. They believe all writing is autobiographical...To write my books I needed... time to do its work."

the shout line promises "romance fraught with tension and danger" and while the narrator's voice is CHARMING I'm over a third of the way through and still WAITING FOR THE ROMANCE, TENSION AND DANGER TO BEGIN. Also, I was promised EVIL NAZIS and so far they haven't turned up either...

ok, i have to confess i'm getting bored. i really did not expect a book about the Air Transport Auxiliary to be quite such a neverending catalogue of evening gowns and eligible young men.
