I tried so hard to get into this book. Seems like it was written by a man for a man. Characters, of which there were too many, were difficult to picture. Airplane jargon and mechanical issues were numerous. Maybe if it had been several hundred pages edited out and things that were going to happen actually happened within a chapter or two I could have finished. A potentially good novel but too wordy.

Am re-reading this, a book I enjoyed many years sgo.

I'm struggling a bit. Don't care for the way the author jumps from character to character, I never feel any connection to them.

Will not finish. Another one bites the dust... this whole book doesn't even touch on what's happening on Earth just a bunch of space jargon technological crap and interaction between extremely boring characters

Having a hard time with this one but will stick with it.

I am reading this for the second time, I read it many many years ago and loved it

Done with first novella, 3 more to go. Am not very impressed so far, it just got so political, discussing how to govern, whether outsiders were welcome...too much like current life on earth..

Goodreads couldn't come up with the actual book I'm reading so this is as close as I could find...

Had to skim some parts to get into this book: in the beginning WAY too much background on the various people involved. Now that the journey is finally underway it is quite interesting, very readable. Sidenote: I hope Lecointe is thrown overboard... If you read this book you will agree..

Just started reading, 880 pages, big commitment, wish me luck!

I read a bit of this now and then, this author has a hilarious take on various subjects.

About half way through, I am so envious of the life these 2 lived, 5 stars so far just because of the way it transports me to Africa...

Am bogged down, losing interest, I so want to like this book...

I am so glad I picked up this book in a secondhand store. A dystopian novel, set in California (written in 1993), intriguing, thought-provoking, and just plain enjoyable reading.

Second time reading this, read this many years ago when it was first published.

Can't finish bogged down in all the technical descriptions...

Got halfway through but won't finish it. Characters that you really don't care about talking to each other and interacting , nothing much happening. I guess if I had nothing else waiting to be read I would read on but, Life's too short...

Hope it gets better, a bit of a yawn so far.

Almost made it halfway through, but life is too short. What a snooze. Some reviewers thought this was a "page turner" or some kind of study of human nature, but I think it was uninteresting and just plain boring.

Read this book around 1996 and am reading it again.

Interesting but not riveting...

So far just a series of funny anecdotes, reminiscent of Dave Barry.

Still struggling to finish this, not as "gripping" as I had hoped, and most of it takes place in Victorian
England, not Africa.

Am actually reading this book with the subtitle of : A Journey Through Sub Saharan Africa in the Footsteps oif Graham Greene

Am re-reading this from several years back.
