I love the book, I love Mario, I love his perspective. The last month has felt so strange, since Chl has been absent, he’s with so may different people and I realize how dependent he was on her even though he knew they’re not in love anymore or ever.

And I do wonder whether or not he’s embellished the pigeons, or maybe it’s just that he witnesses the pigeons that it brings a literary weight. It’s fun.

Fascinating, creative, almost scary in its succinct grasp of social mechanisms.

Introduction is not that great. But translation and notes are satisfactory. It’s a funny, brutal, sometime repulsive story. I think it holds the key to fighting a lot of the BS we see today. It provides lots of perspective on the past and the prevailing attitudes.

A very disturbing but quickly occurring moment of animal cruelty. I went from loving him to hating him very quickly. Now the slow process of forgiveness.

I wish I hadn’t seen the movie. With any luck I’ll be done with this by the end of the weekend. This reading is to serve as a counterpoint to Station 11, as far as its views in modernity.

Best line about a pigeon ever

Best line of the book so far in October.

Very easy to read and kind of blah, but kind of interesting. It is a praise and appreciation of modernity but not bc modernity allows us to have deep interpersonal relationships but bc of things like the internet, airports, modern convenience, restaurants. Section 6 was so far the best part. And I’m hopeful for the end. I think it could end nicely.

It’s cool

It’s funny how the narrator Eastbrooj is probably Christie’s Husband and Adriane Oliver is herself. I like the setup and am excited for some occultist mystery stuff.

September starts with a stiff neck and back and ends with a painful back and crunchy neck. And in between what has happened? Shaved yes, programmed yes, wrote no, journaled yes, reconciled no, reviewed yes, given good opinions, valuable lessons, recommended books? Yes yes yes. More clues to his book, he is editing the diary and crafting themes and making sentences so to me sure it’s a diary but it’s his novel.

There are too many coincidences in his diary to be coincidences. They have to be clues to the nature of the novel.

Beautiful moment where he starts to explore the theology and psychology of confession and then lets his priest and novelist destroy the Doctor’s desire to confess without providing any real introspection at all. Absolutely brilliant.

Very cinematic scenes.

I’m savoring every morsel.

Slow start, somewhat clumsy, but could be I’m not used to his style. But the story has now taken on steam chop-choo!

It’s a nice normal story, i am enjoying it. There are lots of big words.

I love it, it’s really fascinating.

It’s fantastic. It’s challenging, the pages turn slowly to start but once you find the cadence it’s a wonderful fun narrative with deeply flawed characters.

Effortless writing with stories within stories within stories. Allusions to all the books before it. I know that it won’t tie anything up, that every answer will just make more questions, but it’s mesmerizing anyway.

Much needed relief from the relentless rape and murder of book 4.
