Anyone w/ a conscience needs to read this book. It will sicken you. As sad as the narrative is, the truth needs to hurt sometimes in order to resonate. It makes one want to go live in a cave to get away from these people, many of whom you will recognize daily on the television. There must be a place in hell reserved for many of them. Most have the character of a booger that you cannot shake off your finger.

I found the book to be a balanced historical fiction, depicting perspectives of both Taino native people and exploring Europeans. Level of historical detail was good, & the politics of Columbo's voyage provide an interesting historical view of imperialistic royalty. I believe that the decision to end the story with the reflection of the Taino chieftain on his uncertain future was keen instinct; we know the outcome.
