Ah, I am involved in this as too rarely happens; can't wait for the evening, to return. I've noticed, I think, a bit of romance-genre timing borrowed for the relationship story. Great sex scene.

Reading this for real at last. It is a delight. Just read a glorious passage (Jack waking up on board). What writing, m'lud.

Picked this up again. So readable by Edmund White, you feel you're getting everything (600 pages) without the tedious detail of biographies.

The comic mode was wearing on me, but the last two chapters have been about atrocity. A couple of sentences I have highlighted for musicality or for being classic sentences that crash beauty and atrocity together. So I am won again.

I'm just enjoying the word choice. Everything vivid, nothing trite.

Two I liked: Devil and the Dancer, and even more -- with its weird flowers -- Garden of Blood. One story to go. I'm glad I ventured here.

Well this is a terrible turn of events.

Laugh, but my underbrain never shook its childhood fear of werewolves. Funny how I've got attached to several of them.

Gods this is good.

'Traveller's Dream' a standout

'magical tinker', 'battered tramp': Morlock is the most likeable of S&S heroes. Novelette 'Fire and Water' in which Morlock loses his shoes ... and a sequence of unexpected events and encounters follows. Notable for Morlock's pet intelligent flames whose endangerment is oddly affecting.

Next up in this pseudo-Arthurian: 'An Old Lady and a Lake'

Certainly has a complexity of Central Asian religio-politics, but such a shame the next two weren't published in English. I'm glad we got the Central Asian one though, out of the three. The others centre in Byzantium and Tang China.

This is still being gorgeous (with a couple of niggles). I greatly enjoy the writing.
