Lovely use of language. Sophisticated writing but handled with a light touch - gently intriguing introduction to the two main characters and the first two magical characters as well…

My fears and worries as a mother all heart wrenchingly conveyed and realised.

This is the first book that’s had me ugly crying in years. I’m not retracting my proclaimed love for the book I felt at the beginning; I love the language, the characterisation, how Violette is almost a sum of the stories she supports and her life seems to be made of the endings of those she is surrounded by. I knew from the outset that there would be a tragedy with her parenting journey, but all her fears echoe

Slow starting but I’m sticking with it in my attempt to diversify my reads in the second half of the year. The translation is a bit clunky but I’ll persevere.

Very well written book that’s a perfect read-together book for my little one. Sophisticated language that works with an old world feel while magical and formal, it’s a great linguistic stretch for my girl and beautiful to read aloud; the vocabulary is interesting and well chosen and the plot and story really strong too. Enjoying together.

So cute. Cosy, fun and still engaging and rather exciting. A book about books, the special skills of a librarian-plus an ogre with a crush on the local baker. Really enjoyable read.

Finding it hard to like much so far… Is this the author imagining what they think -should- be sexy? The tongue thing was just cringe… and it feels like the actress FMC is just another projection - sadly, if this is what you imagine life is like with a generous cleavage sorry but it’s not that all that exciting or that big a deal. Clean eating sidebar seems superficial characterisation too… 🤦‍♀️

An amazing author, and work as haunting and affecting as her others. Somber, gothic and the kind of story that stealthily soaks you in with her prose and her characterisations…

Finally gotten a proper start. Like some other popular novels, and probably a much more common feature of crime novels (? I really done read enough of them to know) but the multitude of short verses, from multiple perspectives, makes the read easy to power through, and hard to put down. As is surely the intention, loving Elizabeth and her super backstory… great stuff.

Loving the authors voice, the sophisticated language and vocabulary, the interesting premise that skips entirely the gnashing about how time travel might work and the implications thereof and gets straight to the people. Lots of depth, heaps of foreshadowing and lots to work with in predicting where the story is going. ***** already…

Finally finally finally picked this up again after meaning to for years. Damn it’s good. Raced through these first 300+ pages in a few hours and it’s 3am and I don’t want to stop. How is Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman so good at this? The language is simple, accessible, and yes the format is fabulous but I’m so damn invested!

Still great, and has the unusual bonus of feeling like it was 3 books slightly rewritten into one. Long and detailed, and still moving forward, even if Violet’s constant dance with death wears a little thin… we get it, it’s dangerous…

Great follow up to the first book. It’s lost none of the plot and action, but I do wish I’d reread the last section of fourth wing first; man that’s a lot of names and places to remember and keep track of… the reason why Violet and Xaden are keeping each other apart feels altogether flimsy and quite the token plot device but it’s another great read so far!

Author is as clever and sophisticated with her language choices as in the other stories I’ve read and it’s a beautiful use of language. Story is restrained and tightly controlled, and while it’s not exactly exciting I am engaged with the story and will easily complete in the morning.

Not quite sure what the fuss is all about. Characters ok but neither especially likeable and very little is actually happening. The lack of punctuation is rather annoying but that does seem to be a choice I’m encountering here and there.

My turn reading this one.
The science is going over my head fairly regularly but I’m into it. I think I got some spoilers which I’m kind of bracing myself for but I do like the style of learning about the past of the protagonist as he does! Very hard to put down right now, and not just because I’m procrastinating…!
