Getting to the Battle of Culloden!

I believe I am going to have to read this again...

Finished with Mary, Queen of Scots, and on to James VI & I. These last two chapters on Mary were definitely the most readable and interesting to me.

I'm on page 80, and I'm afraid this is all the further I'm going to get. Some friends have recommended that I re-read chapter 3 and read the final chapter. I've tried to pick it up numerous times and haven't been able to make any more progress. My mind just goes somewhere else. It's like a textbook. There doesn't seem to be any point to most of it - just reviews of history, philosophical wanderings.

Well, it's not light reading, that's for sure.

Up to 1437. Way too many Roberts. And a few too many Isabellas and Johns.

Just learned about the real Macbeth.

So far I have learned that Scotland was once part of North America, until it slammed into what would be Great Britain from the north; what brochs and crannogs are; and who the Picts and Scots were.

A fair amount of typos and poorly-worded passages, as well as some questionable choices. For example, the section on breast cancer includes ONLY women. It is not even acknowledged that men can get breast cancer.

Where have all the apostrophes gone? Long time passing...that's the true mystery in the Kindle version of this book, from which each and every apostrophe seems to have been lifted in some sort of apostrophe rapture. Story's good, though...

Not sure I'm going to finish this one. I guess I should have read the other reviews before getting it. I thought it was going to be a book about almost perfect murders and the killers who got away with them, and how some minor detail and good forensics got them caught. I'm having a hard time getting into this book. In the first 20%, the author has managed to insult pretty much every ethnic subgroup, gender, and gender preference, primarily by inventing stereotypical dialogue that can't possibly be known. I kind of like my true crime to be more...true, I guess.

So far, impressively well done. Detailed, but not dry - keeping me on the edge of my seat. I know something's going to happen - will you get to it already!!??

My only gripe is that, while word-for-word transcription of recorded conversation certainly adds realism, much of it is so full of 'ums', 'ers', and 'you knows' that it's distracting and hard to follow. It would have been better just summarized in many places.

Good grammar. Good sentence structure. Good punctuation. Virtually no typos. Yay!
