Struggling through. But it's for book club so I'll carry on.

I'm not engaged with this character. Yes, it's sad that your Mom died at such a young age. And it's great that you are such a good kid. But, OMG! Take the money, go to college and have a respectable future. All of these lies are going to catch up to you.

Book two is better. Following it better. Mortdecai still isn't a very likable character. Might as well finish the book.

Finished book one. This is clearly written for a specific audience; a certain Brit of a certain age. And since I'm no Brit nor an anglophile, the humor eludes me. And Mortdecai is not a likeable character. He's very arrogant. Some humility would serve him well.

I picked this up because "it will appeal to fans of Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl and Paula Hawkins's Girl on a Train" and I loved those books. Here goes...

3 pages of Characters Who Appear? Oh Lord!

For someone who likes books mainly because of character development, I'm a bit worried...

It's taking me quite a while to get through this book. Why? I like the characters. They are well developed and interesting. I know why. It's because this is a WWII novel and our dear main character is a Jew. I know what is going to happen and it's not going to be happy. Still, I'm plugging along. Maybe things will work out for him. Maybe he'll live.

I'm quite enjoying this book. Several laugh out loud lines. Ms. Speedwell is my kind of heroine.

Oh the arrogance of the white man. "If you don't live like I live then you must be doing it wrong." "If you don't believe what I believe then I must save you." "Surely I know best and there's nothing I can learn from you." "Oh, and you have vast riches? Well, you need to give that to me."
