I know I had this book, I clearly remember the cover and where I was when I read this. What I don’t remember was whether I loved this book, or whether I didn’t finish it. Both are distinct possibilities... so I’m rereading to find out.

It’s really angry and has very little heart. I can see how it’s easy to get mawkish with WWII stories, and this avoids that, and I can also see that there is a lot of anger if you grew up in Danzig and watched your city invaded repeatedly. It’s a good book, I can see why it’s a classic but i don’t care enough about the analogy, and I’m not swept up by its cleverness this I’m not enjoying it.

I was thinking sarcastically that I wasn’t smart enough or that I didn’t know enough about WWII to appreciate the book, neither of which are true. I fully understand why this is an important book, I can even call it literature but that doesn’t take away that this book bores me.

A man has sex with a wooden statue. I’m not sure how this has to do with the allegory of modernity this book is so famous for. This is just weird.

I don’t care about Eels! This had so much potential... I can’t wait to finish this.
