I’ve decided to stop reading this. The characters are flat and I cannot understand their motivations at a deeper level than what I am explicitly told. The kinks in the magic system may work themselves out if I read farther, but at this point the magic seems cobbled together with missing pieces and contradictions. The pacing is choppy, rushing ahead in huge leaps, to the detriment of world and character building.
