Very well written. Father Copleston's work is dense with references to other works, including Greek terms and words and phrases in Greek, Latin, Italian, Spanish, and German. Some might be put off by this, but as a lover of languages, I consider it a bonus.

On education:

"The picture of several dozen boys and girls in a schoolroom engaged in study made a deep impression upon me, and I had the feeling that to get into a schoolhouse and study in this way would be about the same as getting into paradise."

Nathan is on page 22 of 184 of Ancient Greece: A Very Short Introduction
A bit dry, but provides some interesting insight into ancient Greece. Paul Cartledge's approach is to profile 11 (out of roughly 1000) ancient Greek cities (poleis) to give a flavor of ancient Greece, whose city-states ranged from the Black Sea to Spain.
