"True," replied Danglars, "the French have superiority over the Spaniards, that the Spaniards ruminate, while the French invent."

"Ferdinand!" cried Mercedes, "I believed you were good-hearted, and I was mistaken! Ferdinand, you are wicked to call to your aid jealousy and the anger of God! Yes, I will not deny it, I do await, and I do love him of whom you speak; and, if he does not return, instead of accusing him of the inconsistency which you insinuate, I will tell you that he died loving me and me only."

I was supposed to be in a reading slump. Before I knew it, my fingers kept turning, eager to grasp the world Miller has created. My eyes were glued to the written words the same way Patroclus' gaze followed Achilles in a crowded hall.

"I have always had this contradiction of being intellectually fascinated by right-wing movements while being politically hostile to them," Bello wrote in his preface.

As to that alone, I barked a laugh and muttered, "mood."

"I remember a day in class when he leaned far forward, in his characteristic pose—the pose of a man about to impart a secret—and croaked, "If you don't know how to pronounce a word, say it loud! If you don't know how to pronounce a word, say it loud!" This comical piece of advice struck me as sound at the time, and I still respect it. Why compound ignorance with inaudibility? Why run and hide?"

"It is an old observation," he wrote, "that the best writers sometimes disregard the rules of rhetoric. When they do so, however, the reader will usually find in the sentence some compensating merit, attained at the cost of the violation. Unless he is certain of doing as well, he will probably do best to follow the rules."

As to Saladin: "However, it is not only for his military prowess that he is remembered, but as much for his breadth of view, generosity, and moral integrity. He could be utterly ruthless when time and occasion demanded, but so often it seemed that justice, truth and honour were the wellsprings of his actions."

The appalling massacre that followed sent frissons of horror coursing through the civilized world, for the unbridled and indiscriminate killing of men, women, and children irrespective of colour, creed or race far exceeded the normal coldblooded ferocity of those times.

They came with the offer of a truce, which Romanus spurned, and so battle became inevitable. He was probably quite right, for he must return to Constatinople as a conqueror or not at all.

No matter how great the general, he sometimes needs to have luck. In Hannibal's last battle it deserted him - for at Zama Fortune frolicked with Destiny.

Carthaginians were not people with the qualities to confer benefits upon a wider sphere. Their empire was forged on commerce of a cruel and grasping kind.

On pause. Again. I do have a chapter to write and I don’t want to push myself.

The dialogue in this book is my favourite part so far. There were a couple of lines that made me laugh out loud; and a handful of pencil marks can be found on those I thought were well-written.

Truly excited to start this one! I lost my love for reading because of depression and anxiety. Quarantine period gave me a lot of free time. I got a bit of a breather from law school as well...and so I've tried to rekindle my love for the written word by reading novel-length HP fanfictions. (I've begun writing too!)

Finally, I feel like I'm ready to pick up a book again. I'll start with Red, White & Royal Blue.

"I'm going to destroy you, little man!" Sourcefield yelled after me. "I'll rip you apart like a piece of tissue paper in a hurricane!" "Wow," I said, reaching an intersection and taking cover by an old mailbox. "What?" Tia asked. "That was a really good metaphor." OH, DAVID. Didn't know I missed ya
