Sarah is starting Lake Success
Starting chapter 2. I know I’m supposed to loathe the main male character, but I really want to stop reading. I feel like, past books by Shtyngart have featured terrible people, but there was ample humor in there. This first chapter was just so so bleak. Being the parent of an autistic kid, I also just kind of want to throw Barry out a window 😂

Sarah is on page 43 of 291 of The Secret Garden
A lonely child, unloved by anyone, disagreeable and sour. The cranky old gardener introducing her to a robin redbreast. The stirrings of wonder inside of her heart as she experiences nature and becomes curious about the garden. It's so lovely and really speaks so well to a child's heart and the importance of loving affection in childhood.

Interesting read so far. Nothing is quite what it seems. I'm not sure at all what's going on, but I can't wait to find out. The author brings out details skillfully, letting you discover aspects of his world a piece at a time, while you enmesh yourself deeper into the characters' psyches. There's definite parallels drawn with Orwell's 1984, while also being completely different.

So far, a fascinating read. I especially enjoyed reading about Massasoit, Tisquantum, and the other Wampanoag leaders at the time of the Pilgrims. Right now, I'm reading about the Aztec empire, which Mann says should be known by the name "Triple Alliance", which makes me think of them as a kick-ass group of soldiers from Star Wars...:P

Sarah is reading Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind: Perfect Collection Boxed Set
Currently on Book 2, which is actually books 3 and 4. This is really great. Addictive reading, can't put it down. Miyasaki + graphic novel. You can't really go wrong. Nausicaa is such a great protagonist. If I ever have a daughter, I'd like her to read this.
