torre seems to have shockingly little empathy for sex workers. why she thought she had the competency to write this book is beyond me

sorry, but authors truly need to stop using "you" in internal monologue. who the fuck is the "you" in this case? the easiest way to break immersion is by breaking the fourth wall, especially for no good reason. "i know what you're thinking" you know what WHO is thinking?? I am not a character in this book! shitty ass writing

authors should learn how to write exposition without just writing "this is my name and my backstory and this is how i real about it" in a series of paragraphs. that would be cool i think

i think the large part of the aggression i feel for sager is because i feel he *fundamentally* does not understand women and women adjacent people's points of view. and he ALWAYS writes from a woman's pov. it doesn't feel believable, because sager doesn't understand what the fuck he's talking about

there is something actually insidious about a male character written by a woman saying that a girl is going for "manic-pixie-dream-girl" just because of the way she looks and how she "leans over" a bar. like that term is so demeaning and with no basis just assigning a random female character who won't show up again "manic pixie dream girl" so that the reader knows that this is not a cool girl is actually really gross

when the threat is so virulently obvious and insidious before even a quarter of the book, how is any sort of tension supposed to exist. i know who the bad guy is. i know what he looks like and how he acts. i know his motives and i know his m.o. i can't be scared of a boogey man who has forwarded me his whole evil plan before even taking his first step

the NUMBER 1 rule of thrillers is "DONT BE BORING". so far the only "thrilling" part of this novel has been a few sentences about a man who didn't even die!!!!
