Not to mention he’s at least partially wrong about Indo-European languages, as well. It seems he’s basing all that on English

I hate when people insist that languages direct thoughts to some incredible degree. Doesn’t it detract from the importance of the work if you say that it somehow just reflects the way the language itself works? I don’t think anybody is truly making that argument about a “Western” civilisation, although Ancient Greeks are surely almost just as foreign to us as Ancient Chinese.

So far I’m not really into it, but maybe that’s because I’m reading it on the train with people talking

This is actually quite a feminist book

I feel like I missed the point where Lucy and George have fallen in love. They didn’t even speak to each other that much, did they?

I sometimes stumble over the words; is it my English or the book’s style? Otherwise it is quite lovely

Now this is a convincing book

Very uncomfortable book. It lacks life, I think that’s it. Interesting in concept, but doesn’t feel real.

I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but it seems that the author is the sort of pessimist who thinks he’s smarter that everyone by the virtue of it
