I am so glad I wasn't subjected to this book while in school. Free to fully enjoy I loved the story as well as Hawthorn's commentary on the morality of the day, not to mention his hilarious portrayals of civil servants in the introduction. If school turned you off this masterpiece, try again - you could very well be surprised.
